Rain Bird Maxi Wire 14/2, 2-conductor 14-gauge direct-burial irrigation wire — heavy-gauge PVC-jacketed copper for long valve runs where 18-gauge voltage drop is unacceptable.
Overview Rain Bird Maxi Wire 14/2 is a 2-conductor 14 AWG direct-burial irrigation wire designed for single long-distance valve runs on large residential, commercial, or golf course installations. The 14-gauge conductor provides significantly lower resistance than standard 18-gauge multi-conductor cable: at 14 AWG, a 24 VAC solenoid run can extend up to 1,500–2,000 ft before voltage drop reduces coil activation reliability, versus ~500–800 ft at 18 AWG. Use one 14/2 run per valve where the distance from the controller exceeds the practical limit of the standard multi-conductor bundle. The PVC jacket is rated for direct burial; conduit is not required but is recommended in high-traffic areas or rocky soils. The 2-conductor format (one hot, one common) keeps the run simple and avoids unused conductors over long distances. Compatible with all major irrigation manufacturers' 24 VAC solenoid valves including Hunter, Rain Bird, Toro, and Irritrol. Use UL-listed gel-filled waterproof connectors at any below-grade splices. Sold per linear foot; cut to the exact run length at point of sale.
