Have your irrigation system designed

Our designers lay out your system to the highest standards in the industry: the most efficient way to water your yard. Send us your layout and water details, and we'll send back a complete design.

Your design includes

  • Sprinkler head placement and spray patterns
  • Layout of zones, valves, pipe, timer and wire
  • An itemized list of every part you'll need
1 Choose your service
2 Where will the system connect to your water?
3 Your layout drawing

It must be to scale. Mark these on it:

  • POC where the system connects to your water
  • VB where you'd like the valve box(es)
  • Controller where you'd like the timer
  • Sidewalks, driveways, patios, sheds, pools
  • Cedar hedges, vegetable beds, hanging baskets
  • Slopes

Understanding your irrigation design

We make your design as easy to follow as we can. Here are the questions people ask most.

Why do I need so many sprinkler heads?

Your design follows professional irrigation guidelines for even coverage of your lawn and landscape. We space heads for "head to head" coverage: the spray from one head reaches the heads next to it, so water goes down evenly. That gets rid of dry spots and uses less water for a greener, healthier lawn.

Can I take out some of the sprinkler heads?

Sometimes. If we misunderstood what you want watered, some heads may be able to go. Did we water an area you didn't want watered, or assume a storage area was lawn? Are there areas you'd rather keep watering by hand? Let us know and we'll look again.

Can I mix different types of sprinklers on the same line?

We recommend you don't. Each type of sprinkler puts down water at a slightly different rate, so mixing them on one zone means overwatering some of the lawn to get enough onto the rest.

Why do I need so many zones?

The number of zones (valves) comes from how much water you have available at once: your flow, in gallons per minute, from the numbers you gave us. Each head uses a set amount of water, so a valve can only run as many heads as your flow allows.

Can I reduce the number of zones?

Perhaps. Your design is based on the information you sent, so it's worth re-checking your drawing and flow numbers: a change there can make a big difference. If you're able to take out enough heads, you may be able to drop a zone or two.

Can I move the valves, pipe and wire from where they're shown?

Yes. On the drawing we often show them nearer the middle of the lawn than you'd want, and you may prefer the valves in a planter next to the house. Treat the design as a guide.

Why did you use more valve locations than I asked for?

It usually makes sense to put valves near the zones they serve. Water reaches the heads more evenly and you need less pipe.

How often should I water, and for how long?

Every lawn is different: it depends on your climate, grass type and soil. Rather than one long watering, water a few times for shorter periods so it soaks in with less runoff. Your local nursery or garden centre can suggest a schedule for your area.

What should I do when it rains?

Most controllers have a rain shut-off button. A rain sensor shuts the system down automatically in wet weather.
