Using this formula in the fall as water temperatures drop, through winter in warmer climates, and in early spring before water temperatures rise ensures continuous biological filter activity, preventing ammonia spikes that can harm overwintering fish. The 1-gallon size is economical for large ponds and for pond service professionals managing multiple koi ponds through the cold season.
